Forklift Training Guidelines
It is essential that all workplaces using forklifts have the following checklist or one equivalent on the premises. If all of the safety rules are being followed, each of these questions should be answered with a "yes". A "no" to whichever question indicates a procedural flaw that could result in accident, injury or damage to machine.
1) Is the operating area of the forklift separate from the traffic of pedestrians?
2) Is access by pedestrians to forklift areas restricted by a barrier?
3) The walkways for pedestrians are well-marked?
4) Are "forklift in operation" signs clearly visible?
5) Are mirrors for drivers and pedestrians provided at blind spots?
6) Alterations or changes to the daily lift truck schedule has been communicated to employees?
7) The forklift tires being utilized are suitable for all operating surfaces?
8) Is the seatbelt being used?
9) Is the seat in good condition?
10) The maintenance schedule of the forklift is being followed?
11) Is an annual forklift inspection and certification done?
12) Is the type of forklift appropriate for the job?
13) Does forklift has a load chart that is readable?
14) Could the operators read and understand the load chart?
15) Does the chart list the safe capacity for different uses and attachments?
16) Are the warning devices on the forklift working correctly?
17) The speed operating control device is secured properly?
18) Is overhead cage fitted correctly on the lift truck?
19) Have all lift truck operators obtained certification?
20) Warning signs and speed limits are being observed?
21) The operators have current training for the forklifts being used?
22) Do operators know their responsibilities to report any machine damage and forklift accidents?
23) Is the pre-test checklist reviewed on a daily basis prior to the equipment being operated?
